Get ready for the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association (NHCAA) Annual Training Conference and Expo. Join HMS at 10 a.m., Oct. 30, in the Platinum Ballroom 2-4 for a session on “The Opioid Epidemic: Early Identification and Intervention,” with Gary Call, MD, HMS Chief Medical Officer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), drug overdose deaths have been on the rise for nearly two decades; and since 1999, opioid-related overdoses have quadrupled. Of particular concern to healthcare professions is the fact that nearly half of opioid overdose threats involve a prescription medication. To prevent opioid overdose deaths, a multi-focused approach is needed, including establishing new guidelines for opioid prescribing, reducing exposure to opioids, preventing misuse, and treating opioid abuse disorder. Identifying the occurrences of opioid misuse and healthcare system gaming is the first step in preventing abuses and overdoses.
In this session, Dr. Call will provide information about how data analytics can provide indicators for opioid abuse and improper and fraudulent prescribing patterns. The presenter will review current best practices and new methodologies available for identifying doctor shopping, pill mills, drug seeking emergency room visits and medical identity theft.
The session will provide specific codes and indicators related to diagnoses, dosage, prescription filling patterns, drug overlaps and other treatment and behavior patterns that are indicated in claims data and medical records. Dr. Call will also provide attendees with methods to use this data to identify red flags.
